Julia Darrow is recovering at home after a car crash in which her lover, John Haddrell, has died. Julia is contacted by John's widow Margaret, who apparantly knows nothing of the affair. Gradually, Margaret's visits and Julia's feelings of guilt and helplessness disrupt her relationships with her counsellor, Anne and with Gary, her handyman. Left alone in the house together, the tension mounts between Julia and Margaret.
