October 2007 Ladies in Retirement
LADIES IN RETIREMENT by Edward Percy & Reginald Denham
Written in the 1940's but set in the Victorian era, this favourite old thriller is full of wonderful characters. A retired chorus girl from the music-hall is living on the edge of the Kent marshes quite contentedly, until her companion's strange sisters come to stay .... and stay .... and stay.
Tensions mount and are complicated by the appearance of a bank clerk of dubious morality and a cheeky nature. The local convent plays an unwitting part as well as highlighting religious differences.
This is a play presenting us with past attitudes, vices and virtues and has an interestingly enigmatic conclusion.
The play was directed by Anne Gerrard.
